Work Hard, Hunt Harder

Balancing Business With the Great Outdoors

Even Entrepreneurs Need a Reset

There's a myth in the entrepreneurial world — that the only way to win is to grind 24/7. No breaks. No rest. No time to breathe.

We don't buy into that.

At Arete, we believe in working relentlessly when it's time to work — but also resetting deeply and intentionally when it's time to recharge.

That's why we hunt.
That's why we fish.
That's why we get out into wide open spaces and off the grid — not to escape the work, but to come back to it sharper, clearer, and more grounded.

Our Pursuits: Land, Legacy, and the Wild

Some of our best thinking doesn't happen in meetings. It happens in a deer blind, at sunrise, coffee steaming, watching the world wake up in stillness.

We spend time:

  • Hunting whitetail in Central Texas
  • Chasing elk in Colorado's Elkhead Mountains
  • Fishing the jetties in Matagorda and the halibut waters off the Alaska coast
  • Camping with our families on land we've stewarded
  • Scouting new tracts of land not just for deals, but for dreams

These aren't just hobbies — they're rituals. They reset the noise. They teach patience, presence, and perspective.

And most importantly, they remind us what we're really building: freedom. Legacy. Time with the people we love.

How the Outdoors Sharpens Our Business

You'd be surprised how much the field teaches you about the boardroom.

  • Tracking an animal = tracking a deal. You learn to read subtle signs, stay quiet, move with intent.
  • Waiting for the right shot = waiting for the right opportunity. Not every noise is a moment to act.
  • Planning a successful hunt = planning a successful project. Weather, terrain, gear, timing — it all matters.
  • Missing a shot? That happens, too. You learn fast and get back in the stand.

There's a clarity that comes from stillness. A focus that comes from solitude. A humility that comes from weather and wildlife reminding you that you're not in control.

And when we come back to the business? We're sharper. More decisive. More present with our team.
